About the Catalog Cover

Student Autumn Robertson works on the niche mural, a project she and classmate Rafa Orti designed and executed together.

Connecting with the local community through civic engagement is a core value at Chico State. We believe that learning should go beyond the classroom, and encourage invaluable civic experiences that come from working with others in our North State community.

Students in the "Public Murals" course demonstrate this firsthand as they collaborate with clients to bring to life their works of art whether it be on the walls at Chico City Hall, local businesses, or the libraries of rural schools in Butte County. From pitching their ideas to painting the finishing touches, students experience service learning while beautifying our local community with these public art pieces.
