Majors with Important Modifications to General Education Requirements

Following is a list of majors in which GE requirements have been modified. These modifications include special approval for various required non-GE courses to count in the GE categories indicated.

Agriculture

  • ANSC 101 fulfills the Life Sciences (B2) requirement.
  • AGRI 482 fulfills the Upper-Division Social Sciences.

Construction Management

  • Take only one course in either Arts (C1) or Humanities (C2).
  • Take only two upper-division Pathway courses; one in Arts/Humanities and one in Social Sciences.  The Natural Sciences requirement is fulfilled with a course in the major.

Computer Information Systems

  • CSCI 217 is an approved major course substitution for Critical Thinking (A3).
  • MATH 109 is an approved advanced course substitution for Quantitative Reasoning (A4).
  • CSCI 301 is an approved major course substitution for Upper Division Social Science.

Computer Science

  • CSCI 217 is an approved major course substitution for Critical Thinking (A3).
  • MATH 120 is an approved advanced course substitution for Quantitative Reasoning (A4).
  • PHYS 204A is an approved advanced course substitution for Physical Sciences (B1).
  • CSCI 301 is an approved major course substitution for Upper Division Social Science.
  • Take only one upper-division Pathway courses in Arts & Humanities. The Natural Sciences requirement is fulfilled by a course in the major.

Liberal Studies

  • Completion of major satisfies all GE Pathway requirements. SOSC 302 and ASST 200 or SOSC 303 satisfy Diversity. Completion of MATH 110 and 111 meets Quantitative Reasoning (A4) requirement.

Music

  • MUSC 304 fulfills the Arts (C1) requirement.

Nursing

  • CHEM 107, CHEM 108, & CHEM 111 are approved advanced course substitutions for Physical Sciences (B1).
  • PSYC 101 fulfills the Societal Institutions (D2) requirement.
  • NURS 303 fulfills the Upper-Division Natural Sciences requirement.
  • For online RN-BSN program only: NURS 495W satisfies Upper-Division Natural Sciences requirement.
  • NURS 422 or NURS 422W fulfill the GE Capstone requirement.

Philosophy

  • PHIL 108 or PHIL 201 fulfills the Humanities (C2) requirement.

Sustainable Manufacturing

  • Take only one course in either Arts (C1) or Humanities (C2).
  • Take only two upper-division Pathway courses; one in Arts/Humanities and one in Social Sciences. The Natural Sciences requirement is fulfilled with a course in the major.

Engineering Majors

Civil Engineering

  • Take CMST 131 for Oral Communication (A1).
  • Critical Thinking (A3) is waived.
  • Take only one course in either Arts (C1) or Humanities (C2).
  • Take only one course in Individual & Society (D1) or Societal Institutions (D2).
  • CIVL 495 fulfills the Learning for Life (E) requirement.
  • Take only two upper-division Pathway courses; one in Arts/Humanities and one in Social Sciences. The Natural Sciences requirements is fulfilled with a course in the major.
  • CIVL 595 fulfills the GE Capstone requirement.

Computer Engineering

  • Take CMST 131 for Oral Communication (A1).
  • Critical Thinking (A3) is waived.
  • PHYS 204B meets Life Sciences (B2).
  • Take only one course in either Arts (C1) or Humanities (C2).
  • Take only one course in Individual & Society (D1) or Societal Institutions (D2).
