The Certificate in Teaching College-Level Writing offers high school and college composition teachers new approaches to the teaching of writing and theories of rhetoric, linguistics, and composition. The program includes practicums in teaching college-level basic writing, and optional practicums in ESL, literary editing, and secondary teaching.
Grading Requirement
All courses taken to fulfill program course requirements must be taken for a letter grade except those courses specified by the department as credit/no credit grading only.
A grade-point average of 3.0 must be earned for courses required for the certificate program. A grade of B- or higher must be earned in each course in the certificate program before the certificate is awarded.
Course Requirements for the Certificate
The following courses, or their approved transfer equivalents, are required of all candidates for this certificate. A maximum of three units of transfer credit may be allowed in the certificate program.
Students accepted into the MA in English or MA in language teaching may also complete the certificate if they so desire. In this case, courses counted toward the MA may also be counted toward the certificate.
There are no course prerequisites for admission to this certificate program, and the GRE is not required. Applicants for admission must, however, meet all relevant University and departmental standards, policies, and procedures, including an acceptable bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and an application on file with the Office of Graduate Studies.
