The Minor in Asian Studies explores the interplay of traditional cultures and modern societies in Asia through an interdisciplinary lens. Students acquire basic proficiency in an Asian language and an understanding of the traditions and trends that influence the continent. The minor is a useful complement in fields related to business, diplomacy, education, foreign service, international law, international relations, journalism, or tourism.
Students are encouraged to study abroad in an Asian country.
Course Requirements for the Minor: 19-27 units
The following courses, or their approved transfer equivalents, are required of all candidates for this minor.
Language Competency
A minimum third-semester competency in Japanese is required for the Asian Studies minors. Students interested in another Asian language can fulfill this requirement by successfully completing the equivalent of three semesters in the language from an accredited program either in the United States or through study abroad. Students who have prior proficiency should contact the department for placement information.
Placement exams are used to assess the placement level and to place students at the most appropriate level in the curriculum of the Japanese program at California State University, Chico. Students who are native or heritage speakers of the languages, and those student who studied them elsewhere, including Chico State students who participated in exchange programs and study abroad, are required to meet with the program advisor and take this exam.
