Most students who major in engineering take nearly enough classes to complete a minor in mathematics. If they take only a few extra upper-division math classes (and we accept one math-intensive class from their home major), they can add on the Minor in Mathematics, which tells future employers that they have a little more than the basic exposure to mathematics. This minor is also popular among computer science and physics majors.
Course Requirements for the Minor
The following courses, or their approved transfer equivalents, are required of all candidates for this minor.
Select nine units from (at least six units must be upper-division):
9
MATH 217, MATH 220, MATH 235, or MATH 260 not previously taken or upper-division courses, at least six units of which must be from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.1
Total Units
24-25
1
Three units may be from another department as long as the course has significant mathematical content, as determined by the chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Prior approval is required to count Independent Study and Special Topics courses (398, 399, 498, and 499) towards the Minor.
Declaration of Minor
To declare the minor, you must fill out a Plan Change Form and receive approval from the Mathematics and Statistics Department chair by taking the form to Holt 101 for the chair's signature.
