California law mandates that every human has the right to safe, clean, affordable, and accessible water, yet inequities in water policy, resource allocation (quantities of water available), and water quality are prevalent throughout the state as well as globally. This course explores how water resource management (distribution and use of surface water and groundwater) is impacted by water law and policy, which in turn have critical equity issues associated with water supply and quality. Students examine the competing needs of industrial, agricultural, and residential water users in the context of economic impacts and pressures on the environment. What is acid mine drainage and how can we prevent or treat it? These questions and more are addressed in this course, which explores the mineral resources available on Earth, and the environmental impacts associated with their extraction and use.
