The Minor in European Studies consists of the basic study of a European language and an interdisciplinary selection of courses chosen in consultation with the program coordinator. Students develop informed perspectives on both historical and contemporary aspects of European life and culture. The minor is a useful complement to majors in European languages, the arts, history, international relations, political science, and business.
Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of study abroad opportunities in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, or the United Kingdom.
Course Requirements for the Minor
The following courses, or their approved transfer equivalents, are required of all candidates for this minor.
Language Competency
A minimum second-semester competency in a European language is required for the minor. Students can alternatively attain second-semester proficiency in the following languages or other European languages spoken in Europe through study abroad. Students who have prior proficiency should contact the department for placement information. Higher level courses in the language will also fulfill this requirement.
